2016 Year In Review

This year was ... confusing. It's probably going to go down as being one of the wildest of our modern time. From Damn Daniel to Pokémon Go it's really fascinating how things can basically instantly take the world by storm, only to be almost completely forgotten a few days later.

It's only going to get more interesting, because more and more people are logging onto the internet every day. And with those new users, new culture gets created.

Personally, it has been a relatively big year as well. Just how much I've grown up and matured, I can really feel it in how I carry myself, and all that kind of stuff. For better or worse, I can't wait to see what happens in 2017! We're so fortunate to live in such an interesting time, and my goal for 2017 is to continue to leave my mark on the universe through writing on this website.

Craziest Moment

Donald Trump becoming the president. Duh.

Best Purchase

Ok I really really love my iPhone 7. I feel like they've perfected this form factor. A lot of people are annoyed that they kept the same phone design for three generations but honestly would you expect them to completely redesign the iMac or any other product line in that same magnitude every two years? People's expectations of Apple are simply insane because the 7 is a great device. I love how it's waterproof, I got the 256GB version so I basically never have to worry about running out of space, and it's actually really durable as well. I don't see any dents or scratches on it. They've really upgraded the metal that they use for their phones. But I will say I am looking forward to whatever next year's update turns out to be.

Favourite Netflix show

The OA. I mean, Stranger Things was really good, but I was moved by The OA. It's a story of violent ends and new beginnings. I can't wait to watch it again.

Favourite Album

The 1975 - "I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it". This album rocked my world when it came out in February. One of the great things about this album is that it has a few clever little references to their previous record. Like for example, the opening track is the exact same song, but with a way bassier sound and some stunning vocal harmonies that gave me chills the first time I heard it. Seeing them in concert in Calgary this summer was amazing too, and then on Christmas day they released their concert film which you should check out if you aren't familiar with this band.

Favourite New (to me) Band

This year I discovered Great Good Fine Ok, They don't have any full length albums but they tend to release new songs in single form every few months. The lead singer has a really unique falsetto voice and they have super catchy songs that I Just love to put on to put me in a good mood. Here's a link to their Soundcloud which is where they usually post new music to first.

Favourite Person

Jeffree Star. I've been a fan of Jeffree for years now, basically since he was making dance music and posting it on MySpace, but seeing him now he's basically given up music and now has a hugely successful makeup company. It's been so interesting watching him grow and as a fan of his for years, I'm actually proud of him. I went to Drag Con in LA in the early summer, and actually saw him there, but the lineup was literally a mile long so I didn't really want to make my friends wait in line with me.

Favourite Blog

Kottke.org - I read this blog almost every day. He's been collecting links and sharing good stuff from around the web for almost 20 years, and that's crazy to me. He lives in New York City, a city that I love a great deal, so all his content does have a kind of a New York opinion to it. Bookmark it.

Favourite Movie

Arrival was a really awesome movie. I was instantly intrigued by it when I saw the trailers, and I knew I had to see it. So we went and checked it out and I loved it! If you haven't checked this movie out yet you should. It plays with some cool themes like languages, time travel, and spacetime.

Favourite Brand

2016 is the year I really discovered fashion and started really reading about different brands and designers. For favourite brand of 2016 I'm choosing Moscow designer, Gosha Rubchinskiy.

This article on Highsnobiety does a good job of explaining why Gosha is such an influential designer for today.

While past generations of streetwear designers – whether high-end or low – have drawn influences from American culture, Gosha designs with a distinctly Russian accent. His collections channel the cross-cultural chaos that erupted in his country following the collapse of communism – a time where Western imports flooded the previously insular nation. Rubchinskiy presents a unique take on streetwear that cares little for current fads and trends; his collections are wildly colorful and filled with awkward, ugly-but-beautiful quirks – think oversized metal buttons, mismatched patchworks and colossally boxy cuts.

Favourite Videogame

I think I'm going to have to go with The Witness. Everything that that game was was just really special and thought through.

Jonathan Blow's first game since Braid back in '08, it's a total departure from the game that made him famous.

Its a puzzle game set on an island that's filled to the brim with mazes.

You explore this island, and as you complete more and more maze puzzles, you learn the rules of how they work - all the while with no verbal communication from the designers of the mazes. Pretty soon you start to see mazes everywhere - even in the most unexpected places. And then you realize... the entire island itself is a maze.

If you get stuck, don't feel bad for reading up online to get help. I needed a lot of help to finish the game. But that's okay, definitely still check it out. It's a really special game.
